Alex’s body is spasming. He groans loudly, grimaces and grinds his teeth so hard that he can hear them crunching.

Red must hear his moans from the corridor as he comes into the room to check it out, though he doesn’t exactly rush.

‘Fuck’s up with you?’ he grumbles.

Alex rolls his head to face him, screwing up his features.

‘My guts are killing me. Really need the bog.’

‘Tough titty. I’m not your fuckin’ babysitter.’

‘It’s you who’ll have to’ – he stops to moan again – ‘clean the shit up.’

Red stares at him, trying to work out if he’s faking it. Alex groans again, arching his body to its limit, pushing hard against the bonds that are still keeping him tied down to the bed.

‘Fuck’s sake,’ the soldier says, turning around and sticking his head out of the door.

‘Boss!’ he shouts before coming back to the bedside. ‘You’d better not be pissing me about.’

Gold strides through the door. ‘What is it?’

‘Says he needs the bog again. Looks legit.’

Alex makes a straining sound, another spasm contorting his body. Gold looks concerned.

‘OK, give me your rifle and untie him. You can take him. I’ve seen enough of his hairy arse for a lifetime.’

Unusually Red does as he’s asked without complaint, loosening Alex’s leg bonds first before moving to his upper body and arms. All the time Gold keeps the rifle pointed at the bed. There’s no need for him to bother, Alex has no intention of trying to escape. Yet.

Once he’s loose he slowly moves his legs off the bed and struggles to his feet, bending double as he stands and clutching his stomach with both hands.

‘Quick,’ he says.

Red has taken his rifle back and pokes him in the back with it.

‘Get going. I’m right behind you. One wrong move and I’ll put a bullet in your spine.’

Gold actually leads the way out of the room but veers off in the opposite direction as Alex staggers towards the toilet. He barges through the door and flings the lid down, frantically dropping his trousers before hurling himself onto the seat.

Red laughs, keeping the door open with his foot.

‘Better out than in,’ he says.

Alex strains desperately and lowers his head down towards his knees. He stays like that before suddenly jerking back up, howling with frustration and lowering his head again.

‘Jesus,’ Red says, ‘you really have got it bad. You ate the same field rations as us. You got an allergy to dehydrated chicken or something?’

Alex says nothing, just continues to groan. He can see Red’s feet edging closer. He slumps ever further and stops groaning. Then waits. And waits.

‘You still awake?’

Red nudges his shoulder with the end of his rifle.

Still nothing from Alex.

The soldier moves closer and Alex flies off the seat, the back of his head smacking into the underside of the other man’s jaw. Red’s head jerks back and crashes into the door frame as Alex moves towards him, grabbing at the rifle with his good arm. The Scot is stunned but hangs tough, clinging on as he shakes his head to try and clear it.
